I have been making this specific apple crisp for years, and I always return to it once the air turns crisp in the fall. It features cinnamon scented apples baked until they are soft and syrupy, all tucked under a thick layer of buttery oats and brown sugar.

One of the best things about this recipe is how rustic it feels, especially when baked in a cast iron skillet. It is truly the perfect dessert to share with friends on a chilly evening, ideally served with a big scoop of cold vanilla ice cream.

Ingredients

  • 6 cups diced apples, Honeycrisp work great
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon all purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup salted butter, melted
  • 1 cup brown sugar, lightly packed
  • 1 cup all purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup rolled oats
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

7Instructions

  1. 1

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees.

  2. 2

In a large bowl, toss the diced apples with the granulated sugar, cinnamon, and the first tablespoon of flour until the apples are well coated.

  3. 3

Transfer the apple mixture into a 9x9 baking dish or a cast iron skillet.

  4. 4

In a separate bowl, mix the melted butter, brown sugar, one cup of flour, oats, vanilla, and salt. Use a spoon or your hands to bring the topping together into crumbles.

  5. 5

Distribute the crumble topping evenly over the apples in the pan.

  6. 6

Bake for 40 to 45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the edges look bubbly and jammy.

  7. 7

Let the crisp stand for 10 to 15 minutes before serving so the filling can thicken slightly.

Tips

You do not need to peel your apples if you prefer a rustic texture, as the peels soften beautifully while baking. Store any leftovers in the fridge for up to three days and gently warm them in the oven or microwave before serving.
