There is nothing quite like the smell of spiced apples baking in the oven on a chilly day. This apple crumble is a true classic because it relies on simple ingredients to create a perfect contrast between the soft fruit and the crunchy, buttery topping.

Since this version is oat free, the crumble topping is more like a delicate shortbread that perfectly coats the cinnamon apples. It is a fantastic dessert to have in your back pocket when you want something warm and comforting without too much fuss in the kitchen.

Ingredients

  • 6 large Granny Smith apples, peeled and sliced
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 cup all purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, cubed

8Instructions

  1. 1

Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit and grease a baking dish.

  2. 2

In a large bowl, toss the sliced apples with the half cup of sugar, cinnamon, and lemon juice until they are well coated.

  3. 3

Spread the apple mixture evenly into your prepared baking dish.

  4. 4

In a separate medium bowl, mix the flour and remaining sugar together.

  5. 5

Use a pastry cutter or your fingers to work the cold butter into the flour mixture until it looks like coarse crumbs.

  6. 6

Sprinkle the crumble topping evenly over the apples.

  7. 7

Bake for 35 to 40 minutes until the top is golden brown and the apple juices are bubbling around the edges.

  8. 8

Let it cool for about 10 minutes before serving so the filling can set.

Tips

Serve this warm with a generous scoop of vanilla bean ice cream or a dollop of fresh whipped cream. If you have leftovers, keep them in the fridge and warm them up in the microwave the next day for a quick treat.
