There is something so special about waking up on a weekend to the smell of fresh dough. These buns are a favorite in my house because they are soft, sweet, and pair perfectly with a warm cup of coffee or tea.

You can choose to bake them or fry them depending on your preference. Frying gives them that classic golden color we all love, but baking is a much easier process if you want to keep the kitchen clean.

Ingredients

  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 1/2 cup warm milk
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 1/3 cup melted butter
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 large egg
  • 3 1/2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup softened butter
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 1 cup powdered sugar for the glaze
  • 2 tablespoons milk for the glaze

8Instructions

  1. 1

Combine the warm water, milk, and yeast in a bowl and let it sit for five minutes until foamy.

  2. 2

Mix in the sugar, melted butter, salt, egg, and flour to form a soft dough.

  3. 3

Knead the dough on a floured surface for about five minutes until smooth, then let it rise in a warm spot for one hour.

  4. 4

Roll the dough into a large rectangle and spread the softened butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon over the top.

  5. 5

Roll the dough up tightly like a jelly roll and cut it into individual rounds.

  6. 6

To fry, heat oil in a deep pan and fry until golden brown on both sides. To bake, place them in a greased pan and bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 20 minutes.

  7. 7

Whisk the honey, powdered sugar, and milk together to create a smooth glaze.

  8. 8

Drizzle the glaze generously over the buns while they are still warm.

Tips

Store any leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to three days. You can warm them up in the microwave for ten seconds to get that fresh out of the oven softness back.
