One Skillet Apple Cider Chicken
This cozy chicken dinner combines sweet apples and savory herbs in a creamy cider sauce that tastes just like autumn.
enzo81.xyzI love making this dish as soon as the air turns crisp and the leaves start to change. It is one of those meals that feels fancy enough for a weekend but is easy enough to pull together on a busy Tuesday night. The combination of sweet apples and savory sage makes your kitchen smell absolutely wonderful.
My favorite thing about this recipe is how it all happens in one pan. You get juicy chicken and tender apples without a mountain of dishes to wash later. If you have some crusty bread on hand, make sure to serve it on the side to soak up every drop of that creamy sauce.
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons butter, divided
- 1 medium onion, sliced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 large firm apples, like Honeycrisp or Gala, sliced 1/4 inch thick
- 4 boneless skinless chicken breasts
- 1/4 cup dry white wine, like Pinot Grigio
- 1/2 cup apple cider
- 1/2 cup chicken broth
- 1/2 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
- 1 tablespoon fresh sage, chopped
- 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Fresh sage leaves for garnish
13Instructions
- 1
Melt 1 tablespoon of butter in a large skillet over medium heat.
- 2
Add the onion and cook for about 5 minutes until it softens.
- 3
Stir in the garlic and sliced apples, then cook for 4 or 5 minutes until the apples start to get tender.
- 4
Move the apple and onion mixture to a plate and set it aside for now.
- 5
Add the rest of the butter to the same skillet.
- 6
Season your chicken with salt and pepper, then sear it for 3 or 4 minutes on each side.
- 7
Continue cooking the chicken until it reaches an internal temperature of 165 degrees, then move it to a plate.
- 8
Pour the white wine into the skillet and use a spoon to scrape up all the tasty browned bits from the bottom.
- 9
Let the wine simmer for a minute or two, then pour in the apple cider, chicken broth, pumpkin pie spice, sage, mustard, and heavy cream.
- 10
Stir everything together and let it simmer for 10 to 15 minutes until the sauce thickens up.
- 11
Add the chicken and the apple mixture back into the skillet.
- 12
Let it all warm through for a few minutes so the flavors can blend.
- 13
Spoon that creamy sauce over the chicken and top it with extra sage before serving.
Tips
Leave the skin on your apples so they hold their shape and add a pop of color to the plate. If your cider is very sweet, you can add an extra spoonful of Dijon mustard to balance the flavor. Store any leftovers in the fridge for up to three days.
