There is something special about a big bowl of mashed potatoes on the holiday table. Everyone loves them because they are rich, creamy, and pair perfectly with turkey and gravy.

My top tip for the best texture is to use a potato ricer if you have one, but a standard hand masher works just fine too. Just make sure to add your butter while the potatoes are still steaming hot so it melts in completely.

Ingredients

  • 3 pounds Yukon Gold potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream or whole milk
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • Fresh chives for garnish

6Instructions

  1. 1

Place the potato chunks in a large pot and cover them with cold water by about an inch.

  2. 2

Bring the water to a boil over medium high heat, then reduce the heat to a simmer and cook for about 15 to 20 minutes until the potatoes are fork tender.

  3. 3

Drain the potatoes thoroughly and return them to the warm pot for a minute to let any extra moisture evaporate.

  4. 4

Add the butter, cream, and minced garlic to the pot with the potatoes.

  5. 5

Use a potato masher or ricer to blend everything together until you reach your desired level of creaminess.

  6. 6

Stir in the salt and pepper, taste to check the seasoning, and top with fresh chives before serving.

Tips

Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to three days. You can reheat them on the stove over low heat with a tiny splash of milk to bring back that creamy texture.
