Homemade Creamy Scalloped Potatoes
A comforting classic with tender potato slices in a rich, onion infused cream sauce.
enzo81.xyzThere is nothing quite like a big dish of homemade scalloped potatoes fresh from the oven. These are so much better than anything from a box because the sauce is thick, creamy, and full of flavor from slow cooked onions and fresh herbs.
The secret to getting them perfectly tender is slicing the potatoes thin and letting them bake until the edges are bubbly. If you want to add a little something extra, you can sprinkle some shredded cheddar or parmesan between the layers.
Ingredients
- 3 pounds Yukon Gold potatoes, peeled and sliced thin
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1 large onion, thinly sliced
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/4 cup all purpose flour
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves
- 1.5 teaspoons salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- Optional: 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
12Instructions
- 1
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F and lightly grease a large baking dish with butter.
- 2
In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat and add the sliced onions.
- 3
Cook the onions for about 10 minutes until they are soft and lightly golden brown.
- 4
Stir in the minced garlic and cook for one more minute until it smells wonderful.
- 5
Whisk in the flour and cook for about 2 minutes to create a thick paste.
- 6
Slowly pour in the milk and heavy cream while whisking constantly to keep the sauce smooth.
- 7
Add the salt, pepper, and thyme, then let the sauce simmer for a few minutes until it thickens up.
- 8
Arrange half of your potato slices in the bottom of the prepared baking dish.
- 9
Pour half of the cream sauce over the first layer of potatoes.
- 10
Add the remaining potatoes on top and cover them with the rest of the sauce.
- 11
Cover the dish tightly with aluminum foil and bake for 45 minutes.
- 12
Remove the foil and continue baking for another 30 to 40 minutes until the potatoes are very tender and the top is golden.
Tips
Store any leftovers in a sealed container in the fridge for up to three days. When you reheat them, add a tiny splash of milk to help the sauce stay creamy. If you decide to use cheese, sprinkle it on for the last 20 minutes of baking so it gets bubbly and brown.
