Rustic Apple Galette
A simple and delicious free form apple tart that gives you all the flavors of apple pie with much less effort.
enzo81.xyzAn apple galette is basically a rustic, open faced pie that skips the fancy crimping and top crust. It is the perfect dessert for when you want something homemade and comforting but do not want to spend hours in the kitchen fussing over a complicated pastry design.
The beauty of this dish is its casual appearance. Since it is meant to look a bit messy, you never have to worry about achieving perfection. My favorite tip is to make sure your butter is extra cold before you start the dough because that is the secret to a perfectly flaky crust.
Ingredients
- 1 1/4 cups all purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, cubed
- 3 to 4 tablespoons ice water
- 2 large apples, peeled and sliced thin
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 egg, beaten for egg wash
10Instructions
- 1
Mix the flour, salt, and sugar in a large bowl.
- 2
Cut the cold butter into the flour mixture using a pastry cutter or your fingers until it looks like coarse crumbs.
- 3
Drizzle in the ice water one tablespoon at a time, mixing until the dough just starts to come together.
- 4
Form the dough into a disk, wrap it in plastic, and let it chill in the fridge for at least 30 minutes.
- 5
Toss the apple slices with brown sugar, cinnamon, and lemon juice in a bowl.
- 6
Roll the chilled dough out on a floured surface into a rough circle about 10 inches wide.
- 7
Arrange the apple slices in the center of the dough, leaving a two inch border all the way around.
- 8
Fold the edges of the dough up and over the outer apples, leaving the center exposed.
- 9
Brush the edges of the dough with the beaten egg.
- 10
Bake at 375 degrees Fahrenheit for about 30 to 35 minutes or until the crust is golden brown and the apples are tender.
Tips
This galette tastes best served warm with a big scoop of vanilla ice cream on the side. If you have leftovers, keep them in an airtight container in the fridge and warm them up in the oven for a few minutes to get the crust crispy again.
