There is something so comforting about the smell of apples and cinnamon baking in the oven. These turnovers are a favorite in my house because they have that perfect crunch from the crust and a soft, warm center that tastes just like a classic slice of apple pie.

I love making these from scratch, but you can always use store bought puff pastry if you are short on time. Just remember to keep your dough cold while you work with it so the crust stays light and flaky after it bakes.

Ingredients

  • 2 large apples, peeled and diced
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 package puff pastry or homemade pie dough
  • 1 egg beaten with 1 tablespoon water for egg wash
  • Coarse sugar for sprinkling

9Instructions

  1. 1

Preheat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

  2. 2

In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine the diced apples, sugar, cinnamon, and butter.

  3. 3

Cook the apples for about 5 to 7 minutes until they are soft and the juices have thickened, then remove from the heat and let them cool completely.

  4. 4

Roll out your dough on a lightly floured surface and cut it into equal squares.

  5. 5

Spoon a small amount of the apple mixture into the center of each square.

  6. 6

Fold the dough over to form a triangle and use a fork to crimp the edges shut.

  7. 7

Place the turnovers on your baking sheet, brush the tops with the egg wash, and sprinkle with a little coarse sugar.

  8. 8

Bake for 18 to 20 minutes until the crust is golden brown and puffy.

  9. 9

Let the turnovers cool for a few minutes before serving.

Tips

These are best served warm, but you can store any leftovers in an airtight container for up to three days. If the crust gets soft, just pop them in a toaster oven for a few minutes to crisp them back up.
