Blackened tilapia is one of my favorite go to meals when I need something fast but flavorful. It uses simple pantry spices and cooks in a hot skillet to create a delicious crust while keeping the fish tender and flaky on the inside.

My whole family loves this meal because it is not too spicy, even with the touch of cayenne. It is such a versatile dish that works well with rice, in tacos, or served over a crisp green salad.

Ingredients

  • 4 tilapia fillets
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter
  • 1 tablespoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

6Instructions

  1. 1

Pat the tilapia fillets dry with paper towels to ensure the seasoning sticks well.

  2. 2

In a small bowl, mix together the smoked paprika, garlic powder, dried oregano, cayenne, salt, and black pepper.

  3. 3

Brush both sides of each fish fillet with the melted butter.

  4. 4

Sprinkle the spice mixture evenly over both sides of the fish, pressing it in slightly with your fingers.

  5. 5

Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium high heat.

  6. 6

Place the fillets in the skillet and cook for about 3 to 4 minutes per side until the fish is golden brown and flakes easily with a fork.

Tips

Store any leftover fish in an airtight container in the fridge for up to two days. Reheat it gently in a pan with a little butter to keep it from drying out. This fish also tastes great cold when flaked over a salad for lunch the next day.
